knitting

Lots of evening knitting lately.  I have been working on this sweater and having a great time seeing it grow, I love the color, I love the pattern and I love the thought of wearing it and maybe just maybe having someone say "oh what a pretty sweater where did you get it"  and then I can say oh well thank you I made it. ahhh to say it out loud. I love that part,  Mostly because a couple of years ago I could not have said that.
Here is the little knitting bag/stand that I have been using to house this project. I picked it up at the thrift shop for 3.00 with the idea that I would redo it  but found myself using and loving it! its just so handy
I thought I'd share a little bit of my laundry room with you too, since it pertains to knitting, in this little corner anyway.   This is a little bulletin board that I made a few years back  and am now using it to help me remember how to take care of my hand knits.  Plus it makes me do a gauge swatch  ( a swatch of knitting that ensures you are using the correct sized needels  for your project )  it's usually a 4"X4" square.  I take that square along with the washing instructions from the skein of yarn and pin it to the board.
and since thier are all those symbles  that I don't understand I printed out a little cheat sheet from a site like this one.
What have you been doing this winter?
Are you knitting ?

starts and finishes

This week I have been ... working in the studio. Going threw totes and drawers and shelves of fabric trying to use some of it to complete a couple of projects around the house. I found this old hamper at a local thrift store and decided to make a liner for it!  vintage barkcloth and vintage hand crochet lace two of my favorite things!
My yarn and needles arrived on Monday so I got a good start on this  little number I'm so excited about this one. Im thinking about making a couple of modifications to the pattorn.
 d
I've also been taking some time to just sit and enjoy the quiet of winter.  This is a hard one for me,  I mean no TV no movies nothing and no one there to entertain me.  I have gotten so used to making someone/thing else responsible for my entertainment with no participation  from me. So this week for a couple of nights its  just me and  a knitting project  or a book. It feels good to unplug for a while.
another studio fabric use up.  This I made for my daughter, a dust cover for her very nicest dress and a pouch for her dress shoes.
also been trying to focus on eating as much whole foods as I can.  Lots and lots of veg. and I'm even working on my bread making skills using this book  every loaf gets a little bit better.

enjoying the late afternoon sun as it slips away for another long evening.
and I finished up with my desert vest.

I like to be able to look back at a week and see that things have been accomplished. I like this space to remind myself that I did get things done and that I am making my home/life for me and those that I love.
This is what is important to me and it's a good feeling to be able to see and say that yes I am living my dream.
I feel like to richest person in the world and so totally blessed to be able to do this.
How about you are you living your dream in some way? I hope so

A Room Of His Own

this is a very very very delayed post on the room that I redid for my Grandson this summer.   One that I'm pretty proud of.  The room was my son's before he moved out and he is responsible for the great paint job.  I thought he did such a great job that I decided to just work with the colors Brown and blue  perfect for a little boy right?
I did very little in the way of spending money on anything new  most everything was just re-purposed.
The only new things were the crib the wall words and the fabric for the quilt.  everything else I had ... this slip covered chair with footstool has been in just about every room in my house  I love white slipcovers they go anywhere and when they get dirty I can BLEACH if I need to.
This dresser has also been in a few different rooms. I did repaint it and added some different hardware that we had out in the garage
This is a picture of the little man himself! it was a gift from my sister-in-law she is great with the camera
Wall Words, I think I paid maybe 10.00 for this set. love the saying
and finally the little quilt that I put together.  I'm not a quilter but I think it turned out pretty well.
So there it is finally I got this one posted.

Finished, Finishing and Waiting

Finished with this sweater,  that I Love!  this is the sweater that I wear around the house 99% of the time.  Its called London Bridges Cardigan and was my first project with a cable stitch in it. More details  here

Finishing With this little project hopefully today ... my desert vest.  A project that I was inspired to do and have done by March 14th when we leave for our trip to the desert to visit with family!

And finally I am waiting for this yarn to arrive in the mail.   I ordered it yesterday to start this project! this will be my desert sweater,  a new goal! hopefully I will be able to get this finished for our trip, if not it will be a good project for the plain trip

A Gift

Christmas for me is a time to give something special to the ones I love and  that means that they get at least one hand made item from me.  That can be a little tricky when it comes to making something for hubby!
This year however I think I did good. I saw this idea on Pintrest
I had my kids help me with getting the template made and cutting out the wood and the rest was just attaching saved corks some with special occasions and dates on them others were just great looking corks  with lots and  lots of glue!
and there you have it! and yes he liked it.

Growing

Minnesota in the winter  gets to be a pretty bland place. Usually it's just white snow
this year however its just brown, brown, brown. hardly any snow
It's times like this  that I'm especially thankful for the growing that's going on in my home.
African Violets~ this is the very first African violet that I've been able to keep alive let alone have it bloom for me and its done so several times   I picked this one up at Wal Mart 2 years ago and it's bloomed 5 or 6 times and it just keeps getting bigger and bigger.
While Christmas shopping this year I picked up some paper whites,  they have been well  worth the 4.99 that I paid for them.  I put the bulbs in a tall vase with rocks at the bottom and just watered them making sure that the water did not get above the rock line.

The first week of January I got these guys going, They are Hyacinthia's I picked them up at the grocery store clearance rack. they were 1.00 for a box of 10 bulbs so I picked up 2 boxes.  I looked around the house and found some old candle jars (that I can not bring myself to ever throw out )   and there you have it.  Every single bulb is blooming!
I didn't even put them in dirt I just used the sawdust stuff that they were packaged in to keep them in place and then watered the sawdust stuff .   yeah! now I have color and life in the "dead" of winter.
how about you do you need a little extra color and life in the winter months?

Making

Making these things in the kitchen right now!  winter in Minnesota means cold and dry.  This homemade lip balm is the perfect cure.  I found the tutorial and recipe here you'll need to scroll to the bottom of her post if you want to give it a try.  I found the containers at JoAnn fabrics in the beading section
I've been having fun in the kitchen with this culinary adventure, It thrills me every time I make it and it turns out... Homemade yogurt! I love the taste of this stuff! only wish I were making it with raw milk. I found the recipe here
and finally this stuff that my family and their friends can't seem to get enough of,  Granola.  I'm still tweaking the recipe and trying to make it a bit healthier  but as of now here is the recipe
Granola
6 cups rolled oats ( not the instant )
4 cups nuts~ what ever kind you like or have on hand I use almonds pecans walnut most often
1 1/2 cups shredded coconut~ I use the unsweetened kind that you can find in the health food section.
1/2 cup brown sugar
4 Tbls Ground flax seeds ~ note, you must grind your flax seeds to make them nutritionally beneficial to you other wise they just slip threw your system unused.
MIX THESE INGREDIENTS IN A LARGE BOWL
In a small sauce pan gently heat
1/2 cup + 2 Tbls of honey
1/2 cup coconut oil
1 1/2 Tsp sea salt
when heated and oil is melted then pour over oat mixture and mix
dump out onto two large cookie sheets
and bake at 250* for about one and a half hours  mixing often
when mixture is finished baking mix in 2 cups dried fruit  ( what ever you like )
Store in an air tight container  and enjoy!!
